 Heat case study: blog tasks

Work through the following tasks and questions to build a detailed case study for Heat - 21-27 November 2020. This will give you plenty of background information to use in an exam question on magazines.

Introduction - Heat Media pack

1) Look at the Heat Media Pack. Go to page 2: the Heat mission. Write three things that Heat offers its readers under 'print'.

It offers its readers a “true, unique, quality experience”,and has the celeb contacts to give readers the exclusive and is all inclusive

2) Now go to page 3 of the Media Pack - celebrity focus. What does the page say that Heat offers readers?

Heat offers readers all the latest celebrity gossip and heat readers are always in the know and that the journalists have all the answers to all the questions

3) Now look at page 4 of the Heat Media Pack. What other content does Heat magazine offer its readers aside from celebrity news?

It offers its readers tips on how to wear the best clothes and know about the latest trends and what is the best body shape and also travel and homes.

4) Look at page 5. What is Heat magazine's audience profile? Write all the key details of their audience here

Heat audience profile is a split of  90% female and 10% male and the average age is 37 and most of its readers are 57% married.

Media language

1)What is Serif font? What is Sans Serif? What do they connote? Which word is written in Serif font and why? Why is the title written in sans serif font without a capital letter?

Sans serif in heat is to make the magazine feel modern and informal and the word that is written in serif font is Posh which is referencing victoria beckham which is also known as posh spice.

2) What are the cover lines? How are the cover lines written to make the audience want to buy the magazine? Use three examples that link to its gossipy, informal appeal.

The cover lines are written to make the audience feel intrigued as they want to know more about what their favourite celebrities do in their daily lives  and an example of this is where in one of the latest issues of heat magazine one of the main headlines was a paparazzi shot of victoria beckham without any makeup.

3) What are the connotations of the Heat colour scheme on this particular front cover? Talk about pink/white/yellow. (Hint - how is this linked to fun? Feminine? Gold e.g. value for money?)

The connotations of the heat colour scheme is that pink is mostly known as a female colour and white symbolises purity and yellow is similar to gold which show that in this magazine you are getting more value for your money.

4) How are images used to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. paparazzi images or aspects of mise-en-scene such props, costume, make-up, body position, facial expression etc.) Remember paparazzi

Images are used to create interest  as it is showing how famous people look lie beyond the screens of our tv and how they look without makeup and they are mostly loooking angry as they are pictured without knowing it.

5) What differences can you find between the use of design and typography between Tatler and Heat? List at least three differences and explain the effect on audiences.

Hints-Think about the central image in Tatler and the use of many images in HeatThink about the photoshoot (formal) and the use of paparazzi shotsThink about the way the cover lines are written and the font, style used

A diffference is that tatler is mostly focused on posh people and what they do in their daily life compared to heat which is mostly focused on famous people within the uk such as victoria beckham and sometimes the royal family

Representations

1) What type of celebrities appear on the front cover of Heat? List them here.

Victoria beckham, the royal family and people who are on reality TV shows.

2) How are celebrities represented in Heat? (Positively? Negatively? Reinforcing or challenging stereotypes?)

Celebrities are represented negatively as in the magazine it is mostly them just doing normal things in life such as taking the dogs out for a walk or putting the bins out and I think that they should have some sort of privacy away from the spotlight.

3) How are women represented on the cover of Heat? Think about both images and cover lines here.

Women are represented positively and negatively as in some of the headlines they are doing good things but are also doing bad things and sometimes the headlines are misleading as they might be doing good things but the headline may say different.

4) How is race and ethnicity represented on this cover of Heat?

Race and ethnicity is represented on this cover of heat as mostly people who are white are in the cover; there are only people of a white background.

5) How do Heat and Tatler represent social class? What different social classes can you find in the features and celebrities on the cover? (E.g. middle/upper class / working class)

In heat it mostly focuses on people who are middle-lower class and is mostly about gossip compared to tatler which is mostly about people who are higher class and is mostly posh things such as horse racing.
